Our Story, Our Teachers:

Inspiraciones de Danza Mexicana (Inspirations of Mexican Dance)

is a group of youthful performers committed to inspiring  other youth and the community by celebrating Mexican culture through folkloric dance.  As individual artists and a cohesive group, Inspiraciones promotes Mexican performing arts with dance instruction, specialized workshops and public performances.

 

Susana’s passion of performing has blossomed into a dedication for teaching and passing on the rich traditions of Mexican dance.  She began her long legacy as a folklorico instructor by teaching  the Roosevelt High School’s Folklorico Group "Alma Mestiza" in Los Angeles, 1981.  Throughout the years that followed she was part of the curriculum and performance venue for the high school to enrich the community surrounding.  In 1998, the new venture of a pre-kinder folklorico class, was founded, which succesfully would now be the children represented at the World of Dance/Arte Flamenco Studio in Alhambra, which presently still offers classes under new direction.

 

In 2006, With dedication, Susana founded "Inspiraciones de Danza Mexicana" (Inspirations of Mexican Dance) with the intention of forming a cohesive group of youth who share there passion for the colorful and exciting energy of this traditional dance form.

In 2010, Susana was placed on the Plaza de la Raza SPVA curriculum which offeres classes to students ages 3 to adult, and houses "INSPIRACIONES DE DANZA MEXICANA" and proud to be part of there family.

 

The group as been given an arrary of invitations in and around the Southern California region as well as out of state; with long term yearly performances with Los Angeles County Fair, Plaza de las Americas Stage. Privilage to share stages with we well known Mariachi groups as Grammy Nominated "Mariachi Los Camperos De Nati Cano", Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan and Mariachi Cobre. Recently IDDM has graced the stage at the "Dia De Los Muertos/Hollywood Forever" for the past 4 years, has accompanied artist as Aida Cuevas, Fernando Allende, Cruz Arellano, El 5150 an Kilo G.

 

Inspiraciones de Danza Mexicana Award winning youth ensemble in the Folklorico category are a proud winners of several 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies in the cities of Los Angeles, Anaheim and in Las Vegas, Nevada.

 

"Inspiraciones De Danza Mexicana" has quadrupled in size and has left a mark with many members that have been enlighten with the new spirit of folklorico dance. These enthusiastic talented individuals who enjoy expressing the beauty, history and folklore that communities long to learn of and celebrate.

Susana G. Hinojosa - Founder

For over 45 years, Susana G. Hinojosa has dedicated her life to studying, performing and teaching Mexican folkloric dance. She began dancing at the age of 5, and by the time she was a teen, became a member of the longest established folklorico dance ensemble Danza Floricanto USA, under the direction of Gema Sandoval.

Floricanto, was the unique opportunity for dance internship and performance; In 1980, the School of Performing and Visual Arts was initiated, and she was part of the primary group that founded "Plaza de la Raza's, SPVA” and with well-known performers and choreographers such as Rafael Zamarripa, artistic director of "University of Colima" folklorico ensemble and de master of Aztec form; Florencio Yescas. Was a vital partner with Emilio Pulido, to assist with the "Performing Tree, for the Music Center on Tour. Her performance history has graced stages with countless artist like Edward James Olmos, Esai Morales, Jennifer Lopez the movie “Mi Familia” and concerts with Juan Gabriel, Vicente Fernandez and many others.

This initiated her drive to teach the artform and instill the beauty of this dance form to students unaware to them they would enjoy for a lifetime. She founded the instruction of five-year old’s at the “Arte Flamenco Studio” in Alhambra, CA., to lead to full time instruction of the tots classes that brought her full circle at “Plaza de la Raza’s SPVA” for 10 years.

In 2006, formally formed as Instructor, Artistic Director, Choreographer, Founder, Producer of “Inspiraciones de Danza Mexicana” aka (IDDM) a proud 50-member ensemble.

Susana has given instruction to many conferences with several folklorico groups and institutions such as USC, Mount St. Mary’s here in the United States and abroad.  Her Artistic Direction has presented at many venues including the stages as Los Angeles Music Center, Gibson Amphitheatre, Hollywood Bowl, The Ford Amphitheatre, and has produced an amazing 25 plus shows. Recently was spotlighted on “Access Hollywood” for El dia de Los Muertos segment. Many collaborations have been successful with the neighboring communities in festivals, fairs and events.

She recently was honored as "Women of the Month" from the Senate, City of Los Angeles and State Assembly 2022.
